E-Waste must be removed:
E-waste may accumulate at the point of generation for up to 1 year as per federal and state universal waste regulations, provided it is stored properly and labeled with an accumulation start date
Who Removes the Waste:
The SFSU Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team coordinates the removal of e-waste.
Where It Is Taken:
E-waste is transported to a centralized storage area on campus, equipped to safely hold universal waste until pickup by a certified disposal vendor
E-waste is typically picked up for recycling or disposal on a bi-weekly or when storage areas reach capacity, depending on the volume of waste generated
Once e-waste leaves SFSU, it is sent to a certified e-waste recycler. The recycler:
- Sorts and Dismantles: Separates valuable components like metals, plastics, and circuit
boards. - Recycles: Recovers reusable materials to reduce the need for raw materials.
- Safely Disposes: Manages any hazardous components in compliance with environmental regulations.
