Experiments or processes that involve hazardous materials, equipment, running water, continuous steam, or other components that could cause injury or property damage must be supervised.
When unattended experiments go wrong, injuries and property damage from flooding, fires, unwanted chemical reactions, hazardous materials spills, toxic material releases, and broken equipment can and do happen.
Make sure you perform a hazard analysis and look at what could go wrong and plan for it. Also consider alternative methods or timelines to prevent leaving potential experiments or processes unattended.
If an experiment or process must be left unattended for a period of time, post an Experiment In Progress notice on the room doors. Posting this notice by the experiment or process may be required as well.
Download the fill-in-the-blank Experiment in Progress notice so you have it available. The minimum information required is listed on the notice.
