Inspection Requirements
The environmental regulatory agency with jurisdiction for San Francisco, the Certified Unified Program Agency, (CUPA), requires quarterly environmental inspections of areas using or storing hazardous materials.
SFSU has ~ 160 of such areas on campus. They are being inspected on a quarterly basis, by teams of EH&S trained student aides using a customized on-line environmental inspection tool that SFSU EH&S developed with the UC’s RSS group. Student environmental lab inspections are overseen and collated by the EH&S staff senior environmental specialist, who also tracks inspection findings to closure.
CY 2024 Update
Due to the laboratories moving into the new Science & Engineering Innovation Center and staff shortages, the percent of targeted quarterly hazmat area inspections fell below expectations.
