Training Requirements
Cal/OSHA requires initial laser safety training as described in the ANSI standard incorporated by reference.
The 2022 ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers requires refresher training as needed.
EH&S provides online or instructor-led laser safety training.
CY 2023 Update
The SFSU Laser program was updated to require retraining every 3 years rather than annually. This reduces the training burden and allows laser users to review the information on line as needed between required training sessions.
In 2023, EH&S created a Laser Safety training curriculum in CSU Learn and assigned it to Laser Supervisors. As of the end of 2023, a significant number of laser supervisors completed the new training.
