Universal waste is a special category of hazardous waste and must not be thrown in the trash. Generally speaking, universal wastes do not pose a hazard when used in their normal manner, but DO pose a hazard if disposed of improperly.
Program Description
Each type of universal waste has its own disposal process. Types of universal waste managed at SFSU include neon, metal halide, sodium, and fluorescent light bulbs, high intensity discharge bulbs, batteries, mercury containing devices, aerosol cans, and electronic waste.
SFSU has designated locations and universal waste labels for collecting each kind of universal waste for recycling.
CY 2023 Update
In CY 2023 SFSU disposed of a total of 57,423 pounds of universal waste at a cost of $28,218.
