Disinfection with Bleach Protocols
- To make a 10% bleach solution, you must use household bleach with at least a 5% - 9% sodium hypochlorite concentration. Check the label on the bleach bottle to make sure of the concentration.
- Always make fresh bleach solution. Old bleach solutions lose effectiveness within 24 hours.
- Soak for at least 30 minutes to ensure disinfection.
- Liquid cell cultures and liquid animal blood that are treated by disinfection with bleach, may be disposed of in the sink drain.
To make a 10% bleach solution, here are some tips:
- Use room temperature water
- Mix 1/3 cup of bleach per gallon of water
- Mix 4 teaspoons of bleach per quart (32 oz) of water
- Mix 2 teaspoons of bleach in a 16 oz spray bottle filled with water
