Disinfection with Bleach Protocols

  1. To make a 10% bleach solution, you must use household bleach with at least a 5% - 9% sodium hypochlorite concentration. Check the label on the bleach bottle to make sure of the concentration.
  2. Always make fresh bleach solution. Old bleach solutions lose effectiveness within 24 hours.
  3. Soak for at least 30 minutes to ensure disinfection.
  4. Liquid cell cultures and liquid animal blood that are treated by disinfection with bleach, may be disposed of in the sink drain.

To make a 10% bleach solution, here are some tips:

  • Use room temperature water
  • Mix 1/3 cup of bleach per gallon of water
  • Mix 4 teaspoons of bleach per quart (32 oz) of water
  • Mix 2 teaspoons of bleach in a 16 oz spray bottle filled with water
