Dead Animal At SFSU

The dead animal disposal program covers the safe and proper handling of animal remains generated during research, teaching, or other activities on campus. These remains may require special handling due to biohazard concerns, regulatory requirements, or ethical considerations.

Characteristics of Dead Animal Waste:
• Includes carcasses, body parts, and tissues from animals used in research or teaching.
• May involve preserved specimens or animals that have been euthanized.
• Often considered biohazardous waste, depending on the circumstances of death or
handling

Dead Animal Information

  • Research animal carcasses (e.g., mice, rats, or other small laboratory animals).
  • Animal parts or tissues used in biological studies.
  • Remains of euthanized or deceased animals from campus facilities.

  • Leak-Proof Plastic Bags: For small animal remains, double-bagged to prevent leaks.
  • Rigid, Sealed Containers: For larger animals or multiple specimens.
  • Refrigerated Storage Units: For temporary storage before disposal.
  • Containers must be labeled “Animal Waste” or “Pathology Waste.”
  • Include the date of accumulation and, if applicable, biohazard markings
  • 7 days if stored at room temperature.
  • 30 days if stored frozen at or below 0°

Lab or facility personnel transfer the waste to the designated animal waste storage area on campus. The waste is stored in a refrigerated unit or other secure storage area until collected by an
approved disposal vendor.
 

Dead animal waste is collected weekly or as needed, depending on the volume generated

  • The waste is transported to a licensed medical/pathology waste disposal facility.
  • It is typically incinerated to ensure the complete destruction of biological materials.
  • Any remaining ash is disposed of in compliance with environmental regulations.
