Wastewater Discharge Permit Program

The program requires that any discharge of wastewaters to surface water needs a permit. This discharge permit sets limits on the quality of the wastewater that the university discharges into the sewer system. The drains around campus are periodically monitored. All wastewater and stormwater from campus drains to the municipal sewer system which goes to a treatment facility that has its own wastewater discharge (NPDES) permit.

Appliances and Equipment Containing Hazardous Materials

Equipment that is marked for disposal, transfer, or recycling has to be evaluated for contamination or presence of hazardous materials.

  • Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers contain freon or other refrigerants
  • Lab equipment such as centrifuges and biosafety cabinets that may be contaminated
  • Oil or lubricant-containing equipment such as lawn mowers and machining equipment
