Hazardous waste generated by SFSU, as a Large Quantity Generator, includes materials that exhibit characteristics making them hazardous to human health and the environment. These characteristics could involve toxicity, reactivity, ignitability, or corrosivity. Specific descriptions and characteristics of hazardous waste generated at SFSU may vary depending on the waste stream.
Hazardous Waste Information
Examples of hazardous waste generated by SFSU may include:
- Chemical waste from laboratories, which could include expired or unwanted chemicals.
- Electronic waste (e-waste) consisting of discarded electronic equipment.
- Hazardous materials used in art, photography, or other campus activities.
- Biological waste, such as medical or laboratory materials contaminated with potentially infectious agents.
For questions related to the management of hazardous waste and to arrange for its pickup at SFSU, contact Dipak Janda (DK) or Juliana Cayetano in the Environment, Health, and Safety department, or the designated personnel responsible for hazardous waste management in your organization: (COSE-Stockrooms or LCA-Technicians). They can provide guidance on the proper handling, storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous waste, as well as ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

COSE: The generator removes the waste from point of generation and bring the waste to stockroom.
Liberal Creative Arts (LCA): LCA technicians gather waste as needed, transport it to their designated Hazardous Waste Storage area, where it is processed by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and then collected for disposal by our external vendors.
Hazardous waste must be removed from campus within 90 days.
Hazardous waste in satellite accumulation areas must be removed within 10 months or when almost full. (LOOK UP REGS On SAT)
When hazardous waste leaves university property, it is transported to hazardous waste treatment facilities that are equipped to handle hazardous waste safely. These facilities use approved methods for the treatment, recycling, or disposal of hazardous waste in compliance with stringent environmental regulations.
