Mixed waste at SFSU refers to waste materials that contain a combination of both hazardous and non-hazardous components. This combination can pose a challenge for waste management since it may include both general waste and hazardous materials, such as chemicals or radioactive substances. The characteristics of mixed waste involve the need for careful identification, segregation, and disposal to ensure both safety and environmental compliance.
Mixed Waste Information
Examples of mixed waste at SFSU may include:
- Laboratory materials contaminated with hazardous chemicals or radioactive substances.
- Items that contain both recyclable and non-recyclable components.
- Waste generated in healthcare facilities or laboratories that may contain biomedical and chemical waste.

The removal of mixed waste from the point of generation is typically coordinated by Environment Health and Safety or appropriately trained hazardous waste vendor employees.
Hazardous waste must be removed from campus within 90 days.
Once mixed waste leaves university property, it is transported to specialized facilities that can properly manage, treat, or dispose of the hazardous components in compliance with environmental regulations. These facilities use methods such as incineration, encapsulation, or deep geological disposal to ensure that mixed waste is managed safely and in an environmentally compliant manner.
